Opportunities at DSACO

The Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio (DSACO) was incorporated in 1984 with one purpose in mind, to accomplish our mission to support families, promote community involvement, and encourage a lifetime of opportunities for people with Down syndrome. We believe this can be achieved by providing families and individuals living with Down syndrome with meaningful, convenient, and unique opportunities to discover independence and to celebrate their achievements.

Available opportunities are listed below:

Summer Learning Academy – SUBSTITUTE

The Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio (DSACO) is the leading resource for information, support, and referral services for families and individuals with Down syndrome in 25 Ohio counties. Each year, DSACO hosts its Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program, which provides 5 weeks of academic instruction for children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. This year, the Summer Learning Academy will have classrooms in Bexley, Pickerington, and Clintonville (formerly Worthington). Each SLA classroom serves eight children with Down syndrome, or other developmental disabilities, on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Each classroom is led by a team of two certified educational professionals and one classroom support professional. SLA runs from June 8 – July 9, from 9am – 12pm, on Mondays – Thursdays. 

The primary goals of the programs are to: 

  • Address IEP literacy and math goals 
  • Minimize learning loss 
  • Improve math and reading skills 
  • Improve social development 

Summer Learning Academy substitutes fill spots when SLA staff are unable to attend SLA for a day. Substitutes are responsible for assisting the classroom staff, including helping students with activities, set up and clean up of activities, and supporting the class’s daily routine.  

Position Requirements: 

  • Must be willing to complete a background check. 
  • Must be comfortable working with and supporting students who have IEPs. 

Rate of Pay: 

  • $15.00 per hour

Summer Learning Academy – TEACHER

The Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio (DSACO) is the leading resource for information, support, and referral services for families and individuals with Down syndrome in 25 Ohio counties. Each year, DSACO hosts its Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program, which provides 5 weeks of academic instruction for children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. This year, the Summer Learning Academy will have classrooms in Bexley, Pickerington, and Clintonville (formerly Worthington). Each SLA classroom serves eight children with Down syndrome, or other developmental disabilities, on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Each classroom is led by a team of two certified educational professionals and one classroom support professional.

  • Improve social development 

Certified Education Professionals will serve as the classroom teachers. Summer Learning Academy teachers are responsible for planning and providing instruction, monitoring and documenting student progress, and sharing feedback with partners and parents. 

Qualifications: 

  • Certified in special education or elementary education. 
  • Ability to create a learning experience based on students’ needs. 
  • Ability to collect data, monitor progress and use data to guide instruction. 
  • Demonstrated class management skills. 

Position Requirements: 

  • Must be willing to complete a background check. 
  • Considerable physical activity – requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. 
  • Must be available for the majority of the program length.  
  • SLA runs from June 8 – July 9, from 9am – 12pm, on Mondays – Thursdays. 
  • An applicant will not be considered if they intend to be absent for more than 1 week, or 4 days, of SLA. 

Rate of Pay: 

  • $30.00 per hour 
  • Compensation covers 60 hours of classroom instruction, along with a maximum of 20 hours for planning and evaluations outside of classroom time.

Summer Learning Academy – SUPPORT

Each year, DSACO hosts its Summer Learning Academy (SLA) program, which provides 5 weeks of academic instruction for children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Classroom Support Professionals will be responsible for providing support to the classroom teachers to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment for students. The classroom support specialist may assist students with daily personal care needs and behavior support as required. 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience working with students on IEPs preferred. 
  • Ability to create a supportive and caring environment for students. 
  • Ability to provide personal care duties. 
  • Demonstrated student supervision skills.

  • Must be willing to complete a background check. 
  • Considerable physical activity – requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. 
  • Must be available for the majority of the program length.  
  • SLA runs from June 8 – July 9, from 9am – 12pm, on Mondays – Thursdays. 
  • An applicant will not be considered if they intend to be absent for more than 1 week, or 4 days, of SLA. 

Rate of Pay: 

  • $15.00 per hour 
  • Compensation covers 60 hours of classroom support, along with a maximum of 10 hours for classroom preparation and cleanup (only between the hours of 8:15am and 12:15pm).
