Recently, Jenny Cunningham was nominated and won the title of Sunny 95's "20 Outstanding Women You Should Know". The following was posted on their website:
"She may not walk or talk until she’s 12.” That was the prognosis. Perseverance and determination changed all of that. Now at 33 years of age, Jennifer Cunningham has shown the world what a young adult with Downs Syndrome can truly accomplish
At age 8, she won two gold medals at The Special Olympics in gymnastics. At age 13, she tried out and won a spot on her school’s gymnastics team. Pushing herself when she was told she couldn’t join her school’s theater dept. until she had 2 years of stagecraft and drama classes, she once again proved herself worthy and then took her “craft” a step further by securing a leading role in the Stephen King mini-series “KINGDOM HOSPITAL.
She wanted a job. She got one. With her television money she bough her own condominium, and now at 33 years of age she holds a clerical job and lives on her own. Throw in the carrying of the 1996 Olympic torch through Worthington for good measure and it’s no wonder she received an award for Personal Determination from The State of Ohio.
Jennifer is also a past Board member of the NDSC, and DSACO and she speaks at local events and businesses about Down Syndrome awareness. She was on a poster for Self Determination - and is currently on a poster for "We're More Alike Than Different", a Down syndrome awareness campaign sponsored by NDSC.
